Co-Founder & CEO
The visionary behind GYG, Steven brought his love for authentic Mexican street food from New York to Sydney, sparking a revolution in how Australians eat fast food.
Guzman y Gomez is on a mission to revolutionise fast food by proving that fresh, real ingredients and bold Mexican flavours can coexist with the speed and accessibility Australians demand. This is the story of GYG — built from passion, driven by flavour.
Guzman y Gomez was founded in 2006 in Sydney, Australia, by two friends who were frustrated by the lack of authentic, high-quality Mexican food in the country. Inspired by the vibrant street food culture of Mexico and the USA, they set out to build something different — a fast food experience rooted in real ingredients and genuine flavour.
The first GYG opened its doors in Newtown, Sydney, serving freshly grilled meats, hand-rolled burritos, and made-to-order tacos that quickly developed a cult following. Word spread fast. Within years, the brand had grown from a single restaurant into a nationally recognised name in Australian fast food.
What made Guzman y Gomez — known affectionately as GYG — different from competitors was an unwavering commitment: never compromise on quality, never use artificial preservatives, and never treat customers like a number. Every meal is made fresh. Every ingredient is chosen with care. That philosophy hasn't changed from day one.
To disrupt fast food globally by making it fresh, nutritious and undeniably delicious — without the wait.
Every meal is prepared fresh to order, using real ingredients — no freezers, no preservatives, no shortcuts.
From Australia to Singapore to the USA, GYG is bringing bold Mexican flavours to communities around the world.
We believe in giving back — supporting local suppliers, reducing waste and creating jobs that matter in every neighbourhood we enter.
Fast doesn't mean fake. We've proven that you can have restaurant-quality food in the time it takes to grab a burger.
These principles guide every decision we make — from the ingredients we source to the way we treat our people.
We do what we say. No hidden ingredients, no greenwashing, no empty promises. Transparency is baked into everything we do.
We wake up every morning fired up about food. That passion translates directly onto your plate, every single visit.
For our customers, our crew, our suppliers and our planet. Every relationship is built on mutual trust and genuine care.
We constantly push the limits of what fast food can be — new flavours, new formats, new ways to delight our customers.
From a single restaurant in Newtown to hundreds of locations across the globe — here's how we got here.
GYG opens its very first restaurant in Newtown, Sydney. The queues stretch around the block from day one — Australians have never tasted Mexican food quite like this.
After rapid popularity, GYG expands across Sydney with five new locations, cementing its reputation as the go-to destination for fresh, fast Mexican food in New South Wales.
GYG crosses state borders, opening restaurants in Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. The brand becomes a nationally recognised name in the Australian fast food landscape.
A massive milestone — GYG celebrates the opening of its 100th restaurant. Drive-throughs launch as a new format, making fresh Mexican food even more accessible to families across Australia.
GYG expands beyond Australia, opening locations in Singapore and the United States. The brand's vision of disrupting fast food globally begins to take tangible shape on the world stage.
With over 200 restaurants across five countries, GYG continues to grow while staying true to its founding promise: real food, real fast, no compromises. The best chapters are yet to come.
Behind every fresh burrito is a passionate team dedicated to making your GYG experience unforgettable.
